The trouble with teens

DADDY'S GIRL: Barack Obama with daughter Malia

AS IF Barack Obama wasn’t already carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, he now has another challenge ahead – dealing with a teenage daughter.

With the US president’s eldest daughter Malia turning 13 last week, he and wife Michelle can look forward to the rollercoaster ride that is raising a teenager. But of course, they’re not alone.

Here, we salute (and sympathise with) a few famous folks whose kids are in the terrible teens.

BARACK OBAMA AND 13-YEAR-OLD MALIA

MOST dads are protective of their daughters and the US president is no different. Mind you, one perk of being the most powerful man in the world is that you’re children will always be well protected by security forces.

In fact, Obama recently joked about the idea of his daughters going on dates in the future, saying of his two girls: “I have men with guns that surround them often.” One word: wow.

WHITNEY HOUSTON AND 18-YEAR-OLD BOBBI KRISTINA

WITH troubled stars Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown as parents, it came as little surprise to many when, earlier this year, photos emerged of 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina allegedly snorting cocaine.

The teen quickly hit back via Twitter, claiming that the photos weren’t what they seemed, and that a “former very dear person to me… set me up to make it look [like] exactly what it looks like.” The trouble with teens, eh?

50 CENT AND 13-YEAR-OLD MARQUISE

IF ever Fiddy is looking for someone to depict him as a youngster, he needn’t look any further than his own mini-me, aka his son Marquise.

But while the teen clearly inherited his father’s looks, 50 claims that Marquise – the rapper’s son with former girlfriend Shaniqua Tompkins – is always protective of his mother. “He’s a total mama’s boy,” Fiddy told here! back in 2009. “He looks at me like, ‘Yo, don’t talk about my mother!’”

REV RUN AND 16-YEAR-OLD DIGGY SIMMONS

THE second son of Run DMC legend Rev Run, Daniel ‘Diggy’ Simmons followed in his dad’s footsteps by embarking on a career in hip-hop. Also a budding businessman, the teen launched a line of trainers called Chivalrous Culture in 2010.

Having first come to prominence, along with his family in the MTV reality series Run’s House, Diggy has literally done his growing up in full view of the public.

JAMIE FOXX AND 16-YEAR-OLD CORINNE

THE Oscar-winning actor exudes confidence, but in an interview with here! in 2009, the Ray star admitted he was anxious about his daughter turning 16.

“The nerves are definitely there for me when I think about her turning 16,” Foxx told us. “But I have different gears as a father. I have the ‘friend’ gear, where we can be cool as friends. But I step it up when I have to. You have to be different as a parent at different times.”

TOM CRUISE AND 16-YEAR-OLD CONNOR

THE adopted son of Tom Cruise and Cruise’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman, Connor followed in his parents’ acting footsteps when he made his film debut in the 2008 Will Smith movie, Seven Pounds.

More recently, Tom spoke about his son when he last appeared on Oprah, saying that Connor being bi-racial was not significant to him. “He’s my son,” Tom told Oprah. “I’ve never thought about colour, race, I just have not thought about that.”

Interestingly, many blogs have noted how much Connor looks like Tom. And Tom never has mentioned much aboout the identity or whereabouts of his son’s biological parents...

P DIDDY ANDF 17-YEAR-OLD JUSTIN

WITH a father who’s known for throwing lavish parties, it came as no surprise that Justin’s 16th birthday celebrations last year were suitably extravagant.

Justin was reportedly given the keys to a Maybach motor worth £220,000 and a cheque for $10,000, but the kind-hearted teen promptly gave the cheque to the Haiti earthquake relief effort.

An emotional time for Diddy, he reportedly told the party attendees: “Seeing Justin grow up is a big deal for me. This is him entering manhood. I wanna take this time out to say, Justin, I love you, from the bottom of my heart.”

SIMON WEBBE AND 14-YEAR-OLD ALANAH

IT’S hard to think of fresh-faced Simon having a teenage daughter. But indeed, the 32-year-old member of boy band Blue is a doting dad. “I am a protective dad,” Simon told here! earlier this year. “It’s in my nature, I can’t help it. But I will not rule her life. She’s got a passion for dancing and I just want to encourage her to achieve all she wants to.”

MASTER P AND 14-YEAR-OLD CYMPHONIQUE

RAPPER and entrepreneur Master P must be pleased with himself. As if his own career hasn’t been fruitful enough, his 21-year-old son Lil Romeo is also a well known rapper, and his teen daughter Cymphonique is a singer and actress, who’s starred in Nickelodeon shows including Big Time Rush and True Jackson VP.
