Twenty by Boyz II Men

NEW MUSIC: Boyz II Men's (L-R) Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman

FIRST THINGS first: thumbs up to Boyz II Men for marking their 20th year in the business with hits both old and new.

It would have been easy for the legendary US group to celebrate the milestone with a greatest hits-type album.

But, with a double-CD release, the R’n’B trio have remembered their past with one disc of old classics, and proved their enduring hit-making ability with a second disc of new material.

Of the new tracks, a sexy slow jam comes courtesy of Slowly; the group’s gorgeous harmonies are demonstrated on the ballad One More Dance; and mid-tempo R’n’B track Believe is a potential club hit. Meanwhile, disc two boasts newly recorded versions of the classics that earned the fellas fame, from the massive ballads End of The Road and I’ll Make Love to You, to the New Jack Swing classic Motownphilly.

The absence of former group member Michael McCary’s famed baritone is greatly felt on the re-worked version of the beautiful ballad On Bended Knee. But on the classics Water Runs Dry and the aforementioned End of the Road, band members Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman prove that they can hold their own – and create the bass – without their former member.

Honestly, it would have been wonderful if McCary had rejoined the fold, if not only to mark the group’s 20th anniversary. But even as a trio, Boyz II Men must be saluted as one of the greatest vocal harmony groups of the modern era.
