COLOUR MATCH: A new underwear range caters to darker skin tones
A NEW underwear company is launching lingerie and hosiery in a range of nudes for women of colour.
Nubian Skin is launching a range of nude bras, knickers and tights for women with darker skin, in several different shades to cater for all skin tones in October this year.
In a recent post on the company's blog, the founder explained the reasons behind Nubian Skin: "A nude bra, skin-tone tights [or] pantyhose – basics of every woman’s wardrobe.
"It’s the grand debate, what do I wear under a white or sheer blouse? What colour hosiery will go with these amazing shoes? Black just isn’t going to work. The simple answer is nude."
She added: "But my nude isn’t the nude I see in shops. Despite the reality that women of colour have the same needs as all women when it comes to lingerie and hosiery, the industry simply doesn’t cater to us. So, I thought, it’s time to rethink the definition of nude. Thus, Nubian Skin was born."
The bras, knickers and hosiery will come in several shades in both plain and lacy styles.
The darkest shade is 'Berry', which the brand suggests would suit women who wear foundations such as Mac NW50, Bobbi Brown Espresso 10 and Yves Saint Laurent Le Teint in Beige 90.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE: The bras come in a range of shades
The lingerie will go on sale at the start of October, and will come in sizes 30B to 36DD, with a wider range to come at a later date.
The lack of nudes available for women of colour also resides in the cosmetics industry, according to the company.
The blog post continued: "It’s an uphill battle, but every revolution starts somewhere.
Looking at the makeup industry, it took Eunice W Johnson to create Fashion Fair Cosmetics in 1973 for black women to really have an adequate choice in finding makeup colours to suit them.
"In the 1990s and 2000s, mainstream brands began to realise the value of providing to women of colour, and despite the billions we spend on make up each year, there are still brands that have chosen not to provide an offering for us."
