SUPPORT: Jesse Jackson and Lee Jasper
US CIVIL rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson has endorsed Lee Jasper's campaign to be elected the next MP for Croydon North.
Jackson, 71, backed the mayor's former race advisor and urged Croydon residents to give the Brixton resident their support at the upcoming by-election scheduled to take place on November 29.
The Baptist minister said: “Lee Jasper has been a long time friend and ally, a committed freedom fighter for equality and economic justice who can make a difference in society.
"That’s why I wish to let my friends in the UK know that I am supporting his campaign for UK parliament.”
The pair once travelled on the race equality bus tour to highlight the need for equal treatment in the economy.
The by-election was triggered by the death of Labour MP Malcolm Wicks in September.
Jasper will face Labour candidate Steve Reed, currently leader of Lambeth Council, Liberal Democrat Marisha Ray and UKIP’s Winston McKenzie.
He hopes to emulate Respect party founder George Galloway who caused upset when he won a by-election in Bradford West earlier this year.
