Venus goes nuts in Brazil

SCARE: Venus Williams

VENUS WILLIAMS had a major scare against Gabrine Muguruza before advancing to the quarter-finals of the Brazil Tennis Cup on Wednesday.

Williams, the top seed who was playing in her first competition since the Australian Open, managed to bounce back from a mid-match fright to beat gutsy Muguruza 6-4 2-6 7-5.

The former world number one wasted three match points at 5-4 after making a comeback from a late serve in the third set. The game was finally put to bed after Williams closed out the match with her first break point of the final game.

"I knew Serena played her earlier this year in Australia but I didn't really know too much about her game going into the match," Williams said after the game. "I felt a little bit up and down today, probably from not playing a lot of matches the last few weeks.

"I'm still trying to find my rhythm. She was playing really well, I just really wanted to win tonight and play another day here in Florianopolis."

Williams will now face fifth seed Magdalena Rybarikova.
