Venus Williams 'at fault in fatal car crash' says police


EARLIER THIS morning news broke that tennis pro Venus Williams crashed a vehicle on June 9 and, according to police in Florida, caused the death of a 78 year-old man, Jerome Barson.

Palm Beach Gardens police force have confirmed to several major international news outlets that they are investigating Williams in connection with a fatal car crash.

The deceased man is said to have been in hospital for two weeks before dying from injuries sustained by Williams, who maintains through her lawyer that the collision between her car and the victim's was accidental and that she did not see Barson's car as she was driving 'slowly'.

A police report states that Barson and his wife saw Williams' car lurch in front of them:

"[Ms Williams] is at fault for violating the right of way of [the other driver]."

Williams' lawyer Malcolm Cunningham told CNN:

"Ms Williams entered the intersection on a green light. The police report estimates that Ms Williams was travelling at 5mph when Mrs Barson crashed into her.

"Authorities did not issue Ms Williams with any citations or traffic violations. This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one."
