Writer Jamilah Lemieux was among those who shared the video on social media.

She tweeted: “Something has to be done about this. That is a baby. They are doing this because she ‘wouldn’t unclench her fists’.”

Responding to the online outrage in relation to the incident that took place on October 18, Coral Springs Police shared a statement addressing the footage.

In it, the police department said that the teen was one of several who had been involved in a disturbance at a shopping mall and that the group’s actions led to the arrest of one male teen.

It added: “The female teen seen in the video began cursing, attempting to incite other teens. Officers attempted to take her into custody, at which time she began to fight and resist arrest. Due to her stature and aggressive behaviour, officers took her to the ground attempting to get her to release her fists.

“As seen in the video she resisted arrest, and in order to have her comply she was struck in the side to release her clenched fists – she was then handcuffed.”
