Viv Anderson: Wayne Rooney is Manchester United great

GAME GREATS: Viv Anderson, left, and Wayne Rooney

EX-MANCHESTER UNITED centre-half Viv Anderson has claimed Old Trafford leading man Wayne Rooney is one of the greatest players to have pulled on the red shirt.

The comments come on the back of the 27-year-old striker netting his 200th goal for United during his double-goalscoring exploits in his team’s 4-2 Champions League win against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.

Rooney is now the fourth highest scorer in the club’s rich history, and Anderson believes that statistic alone means Rooney deserves to be mentioned among the Red Devils’ best.

Speaking at a Vauxhall Youth Football Programme in Rotherham, the former England defender capped 30 times, said: “He's a United great and his record says that, 200 goals is great.

“He is only 40-odd short of Bobby Charlton and Denis Law, so he has to be talked about like that.”

Anderson added: “He has had his ups and downs with the supporters but when it comes to matters on the football pitch, he gives 100 per cent and I am personally pleased he is back on board.”

“Some supporters will remember the events of the summer but a lot of them will think of him for what he does on the football field and the great goals he has scored over the years.”

Summer 2013 was labelled widely as one of discontent for Rooney, who seemed to be constantly agitating for a move elsewhere, chiefly Chelsea, despite not handing in a transfer request.

The versatile attacker has had a somewhat turbulent time in recent years at Old Trafford, only three years ago Manchester City almost lured Rooney across town with a big-money offer, but then manager Alex Ferguson convinced him to stay.

And current United boss David Moyes needed all his powers of persuasion to keep the Liverpudlian on board this season, preventing him jumping on to Jose Mourinho’s ship after three offers from the Blues.
