Vybz Kartel trial:Victim told girlfriend he was going to die

ON TRIAL: Vybz Kartel

THE JURORS trying dancehall star Vybz Kartel and his four co-accused yesterday heard the contents of text message evidence allegedly from victim Clive 'Lizard' Williams expressing fear that the entertainer was going to kill him.

Corporal Shawn Brown, who is attached to the telecommunications and forensic unit at the Organised Crime Investigation Division, testified that he conducted analysis and prepared a CD from the unsealed CD that he got from Joseph Simmonds, a senior employee of telecommunications provider Digicel.

He said nothing was done to compromise the authenticity of the CD from which he prepared his data and CD.

He presented a PowerPoint presentation of the text messages that were made on August 16, 2011, the same day that the Crown is alleging that Williams was beaten to death at Kartel's house in Havendale, St Andrew, over two missing guns.

In the series of messages read out in court, Williams allegedly urged his girlfriend to contact his sister for her to call the police.

In one of the messages, Williams told his girlfriend that 'Teacha', referring to Vybz Kartel, had sent to call him.

In another message, he told his girlfriend that he was really scared, urging the woman to hurriedly call the police.

"Tell them that Vybz Kartel a go kill we, please, baby," Williams allegedly wrote in one of the messages to his girlfriend. He also mentioned in one of the text messages that he was being transported in a car to Havendale, St Andrew.

The court also heard text message evidence purportedly from accused Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell to Kartel.

Campbell, in one of the messages to Kartel, said that they have to get back "dem ting deh". In another message, Campbell sent a text to an unknown person noting that something is going on. Campbell reportedly said in one of the messages that people are going to die.

Defence lawyers have raised concerns after it came to light at the trial in the Home Circuit Court that the sealed CD containing telephone data was missing. The court was informed that one CD was for general use and the other was sealed for evidence.

Kartel is jointly charged with Campbell, Kahira Jones, Shane Williams and André St John for the August 16, 2011 murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.
