Wakanda forever: Black Panther salute sweeps across sport

WAKANDA: Black Panther fever won't let up

WHETHER IT'S a Wakandan-style greeting at an awards show or a showing up to the Oscars in an outfit that you could be forgiven he’d borrowed from T’Challa’s wardrobe, Black Panther himself Chadwick Boseman has been flying the flag for Wakanda at every possible opportunity. And it turns out he’s not the only star who is keen to ensure Wakanda really is forever.

The gesture, popularised by box-office record breaking film directed by Ryan Coogler, is sweeping across sport.

One of the earliest examples of the trend came during the goal celebrations of Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba back in February.

More recently, a number of black celebrities have been spotted making the Black Panther salute.

American tennis player Sachia Vickery celebrated her win against Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain by marking an “x” with her arms across her chest.

“I’m so obsessed with the movie. It’s taking over my life. I have seen it four times already. Literally, I’m obsessed,” Vickery said.

Vickery, who is ranked 100th in the world, isn’t the only tennis player to adopt the Wakandan cross as an emblem of victory. Gaël Monfils, the French tennis player who is ranked 42nd, also made the gesture after his win against Matthew Ebden last week.

“I think that movie is great. It’s great for the community, for our community, it means quite a lot,” said Monfils.
