MARKING the birth month of the late Afrobeats legend Fela Kuti (right), Felabration will feature performances from a host of music stars, including The Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, Tony Allen, 2face Idibia, Laura Mvula and this week’s Life & Style cover star, Shingai Shoniwa.
Felabrations take place annually at The New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, Nigeris and in cities all around the world to mark and honour Fela’s birthday. London has its own, this year taking place tonight (Oct 16) in the magnificent atrium of the British Library.
The supercharged tribute to the man and his music is led by Dele Sosimi and his 16-piece Afrobeat Orchestra. Sosimi played keyboards as part of Fela’s Egypt 80 band from 1979 to 1986 and created the Positive Force band with Fela’s son, Femi Kuti, with whom he performed from 1986 to 1994.
Also taking part in the event will be Afrikan Boy, Terri Walker and The Floacist, who will all join forces to celebrate one of Nigeria’s most famous sons.
