'We need to accept responsibility and stop the blame game'

RAMPAGE: Youths attack a store in Birmingham on Tuesday

WE HAVE been here before. But let me make it abundantly clear that it’s NOT just black youths rioting – it's youth full stop. And it's nothing to do with exclusion from school, police brutality, SUS Law etc.

The manifestations we are witnessing in our cities are primarily to do with criminality and young people using the opportunity via the unfortunate death of Mr Duggan to vent their frustrations and steal whatever they can.
Unfortunately the media and so-called 'experts' are coming out of the woodwork with the same analysis and conclusions expressed in 1981 and 1985.

My question is Where are the parents of these young people? Where are the black leaders and churches? Where are the law-abiding members of our communities and where are the politicians, locally and nationally?

All of the above has a role to play if society is to remove this ugly and destructive menace from our streets and communities. For years myself and others have been calling upon the black churches and leaders to come out against anti-social behaviour, gun crime, illegal drugs and criminality in general.

Their voices are not heard, they are not to be seen. In fact they have abdicated all responsibility to their congregations, their children, theircommunities and to society. In other words they have handed over responsibility of their children, congregations, communities to the very same institutions that they are blaming for the failures and problems – the schools, police, government etc.

We cannot continue to lay blame or transfer the issues affecting the black community on to the shoulders of others. We have to stand up and come out of the self-created bunker we have dug for ourselves.

We are parents, community members, teachers, preachers, police officers, lawyers, doctors etc, and we have a voice. We must be come more involved in the life of our young people, not just as parents, but as responsible black people with hopes and dreams of a better tomorrow for all black people.

We have to join and support those organisations in our communities working for the elimination and eradication of the malaise affecting our communities. We cannot sit on our hands, ‘see no evil and speak no evil’. If that is to be our attitude and response to what is happening in society we will have a far greater price to pay in the long term.

All the evidence seems to suggest that the present cuts in the budget of local authorities up and down the country are having detrimental consequences on things such as youth clubs, social care, libraries, after school activities and other projects that will help prevent anti social behaviour.

However, if that is the case, we have to find ways of creating space, programmes, and opportunities for all young people if we are not to experience similar behaviour in 20 years time.

The social conditions prevailing in the 1980s that gave rise to the riots then, are the same today and suggest that we have learnt nothing from the 1980s.

Yes, money was thrown at the manifestations then, but a fundamental mistake was made. The local community had very little to do with how that money was spent. We can not make the same mistake again.

Local people must be involved in all the processes from beginning to end. Only by this approach will the right and appropriate solution be found. We are all stakeholders and therefore should be given the opportunity to participate in how we extricate ourselves from this unholy and destructive menace.

The writer is telling it like it really is.We need to get our heads out of the sand.Where are all the black owned shops, banks etc?Is the black race not capable to achieve these things?Indians,Asians & other nationalities come to England & have overtaken Black people in areas of business & success.Stabbing & killing each other, blaming whatever is putting us further back. Some people are too blind & ignorant to see this.

I wish i could sit you down and pat your hand in sympathy, these conditions are set so that we as black people have to work harder to achieve little, i am a black bussiness owner and i have several properties i did not achieve these things because i was black i achieved these things because the banks thought i was white, i got all my mortgages through getting a friend(white) to organise my morgages and i paid her a fee for her help and tranfered the properties to my name, and same again for my shop which the general public thinks is white owned because of the saff i choose, i am never there so its successful, so you have to be in the bussiness world to make a comment as you did about other ethnic group(s) advansing and we are not, i remember growing up and my parents(black) were not allowed to get a bank account, so all monies were saves in the family safe in the basement, my parents bought several properties throught my Irish auntie and she transfered the properties back to them, this was very normal back in the 50's 60's 70's you need to read about blacks financial history befour you make such a stupid comment, till this day its hard to achieve because this country still see us a liability and its hard to shake that stigma. It is not through lack of trying, we also are damming to ourselves by still following William Lynch theories.

Very well written peice, it's just a shame that many won't pay any attention to it and carry on the way they have been - we need to wise up and sort ourselves out before there is no sense of pride within our Black community

I couldn't agree more. i have been writing to the press for days now to stop the likes of Mr Jasper and Darcus Howe shouting a load of offensive inappropriate and insensitive 'woe is me the world owes me' a living nonsense. its is utterly disrespectful when the murdered are not yet buried and the traumatised not yet helped. Where is the sound of black reason in the media on this issue? The contrast with Tariq Jahan's dignity after the murder of his son and the black man who shouted about Britain not being a democracy on Panorama - speaks for itself. Shameful.

Lee Jasper needs to keep his mouth shut if fhe hasn't got anything constructive to say apart from the tired 'it's because we is black' speech again - he's not the voice of the black community. Where is Operation Black Vote-what are they doing apart from sucking up to the likes of Naomi Campbell? Wake up people, yes there is racism, harrassment etc going on , other communities have come to the UK after us and managed to successfully integrate and become successful - what is wrong with us that we still can't? This country owes us nothing - slavery days are done - over 400 years ago and we still bleat on about it - get a grip people and move on do something for ourselves and stop with this 'woe is me and the world owes me' attitude because it aint helping us and we continue to drag ourselves further down.

I'm a black West Indian ,I work, I don't mug, murder, riot, loot , burn down buildings but more importantly I'm not part of the so called black community. I only care about myself and members of my family. Why ? Because for a very long time I've realised that a LARGE % of black West Indians (especially from a certain island and you know which one I mean) are hypocritical, drug dealing, gun toting, lazy, loud mouthed baby breeding , good for nothing scum ....and that's on a good day!
They keep quite whilst black youth are slaughtering each other on the streets of London but when 1 white person kills a black person , those same black people take to the streets like rats in the night and cry, beat their chests, loot, burn and murder as a form of retribution. I like good honest decent black people and they are out there as for the rest of them aren't fit to wipe my backside.

To the likes of Fri, 2011-08-12 07:46 et al you are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites! The fact that you say that you are Black West Indian means you are not from Jamaica hence the quite offensive comment about my country! Very selective memories many people seem to have when they so wanted to be like us but now want to blame us for everything that is wrong in the world oh so self righteous and perfect they are! Our country is not perfect, has never claimed to be and neither are the rest of the other islands in the Caribbean or the rest of the world where black people may be but I'm sick to death with the likes of you always laying the blame at our door - You and the rest of the two faced hypocrites need a reality check. Get off your pulpit because you do not sit on the shoulder of God as not every criminal, baby breeder, thief, drug dealer, murderer, benefit scrounger, lazy, loud mouth, gun toting, worthless good for nothing scum that is black happens to orignate from Jamaica - We are also decent people, educated, talented, hardworking, respectful, and honestly contribute to this society as well - keep that in mind and your keep offensive comments to yourself!

Fri, 2011-08-12 07:46 OK why don't you just say what you mean - you are no different from the other bigoted ignorant idiots who seem to want to blame everything wrong with the black community anywhere in the world on Jamaica! You all seem to conveniently forget that there are other islands in the Caribbean and Africa and UK who have and continue to do the things you accuse Jamaica of doing but hey why not lump all the blame on Jamaica! I am very proud to be Jamaican, I don't mug, murder, deal drugs, pop out babies every second, live on beneifts, I have a degree, I work very hard, own my own home and my children both went to university and have very good jobs, so you and every other ignorant fool who want to make these negative comments to absolve yourselves from blame can kiss my beautiful Jamaican a*s because I remember a time, not so very long ago when all of you so wanted to be Jamaican!

Joanne Hill, lives and works in London but from the parish of Falmouth,Trelawny on the beautiful island of JAMAICA, JAMAICA!

Black people don't have a 'community' per se. To have a 'community', you have to have respect for it, and black people were all to ready and willing to smash up and loot just about anywhere they could, including Brixton. Our young black people are united by one thing only - CRIME. We kill each other for our own gains. The black 'community' is a dog eat dog community - not a comunity at all.

The house of parliament is where they planned and hatched out Slavery and empire building.

Who are the greedy ones?

To NOW QUOTE CAMERON WITH PARAPHRASES

""This not about poverty, it’s about culture – a culture that glorifies crime. (THE ENGLISH ARE THE CRIMINALS AS THEY DESTROYED CULTURES, RACES AND PEOPLE FOR ITS CRIMINAL ACTS TO STEAL FROM AFRICA) In too many cases, the parents of these children – if they are still around - don’t care where their children are or who they are with; let alone what they are doing.” (EUROPEANS HAVE DECIMATED THE CARIBBEAN AND BLACK AMERICANS-THEY DESTROYED OUR FAMILIES, THEY GAVE US THEIR NAMES, FALSE RELIGIONS, EDUCATION-TOOK OUR BLACK MALES AWAY FROM THE FAMILIES TO SERVE AS 'STUDS' FOR THEIR ECONOMIC BREEDING PROGRAMS)

“We need action to deal with the most disruptive families,” he added.
It was also suggested the parents should be held responsible in court for their children’s actions" (THE ACTION IS HAPPENING NOW IT IS COSMIC CYCLES CLOSING 360 DEGREES FULL CYCLE-THE CHICKEN HAS COME HOME TO ROOST, NOT BIBLICAL, BUT SPIRITUAL CLEANSING, THE LAWS OF NATURE IS ENSURING INDIVIDUALS AND NATIONS RECEIVE THEIR KARMA!!! AFRICAN FOR SELLING THEIR OWN INTO SLAVERY AND EUROPE, ASIAN AND THE ARABS FOR PERSECUTING AND OPRESSING THE NUBIANS, THE BLACKS, AND NOW UNSEEN GUIDES, BEINGS AND HELPERS ARE NOW HELPING THE MEEK. Lee Jasper has a lot to answer for. He was interviewed after the first night of rioting and condoned the behaviour, blaming everyone and anything, but the people themselves. He is not helpful to the black community and is irresponsible. He has such a chip on his shoulder and a very dodgy past. Perhaps others should speak out for the community and suggest he does not?

There is no black community

Anonymous's picture
Anonymous

There is no black community today.
Perhaps, back in the 60's and the 70's, in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, and during that abhorrent period of

discrimination that Caribbean immigrants suffered in Britain, there was a community which looked out for itself.
Right now though, the riots have shown the utmost folly of some parts of the black population. They've forgotten the

sacrifice and struggle that their forefathers went through, just to get accepted in the country. It's not a community.

Infact, the very term is an insult to the complex diversity of black people in the UK. Are you talking about Caribbeans?

Nigerians? Ghanaians? Somalians?
The Jews have a community - they protect their neighbourhoods with a voluntary police force called the Shomrim.
The Turks proved their worth as a community, when they chased the rioters away in Dalston.
The Sikhs showed commendable spirit, when they stood guard outside the temples and mosques.
Even in Enfield, the likes of the EDL came out of the woodwork, to stand their ground.

Please, please notify me if I missed something out, but where was the so called 'black community' defending their areas?
Instead, they were robbing shops in their vicinity, vandalising property, practically 's******g on their own doorsteps.

That is not community spirit. It's all very well rolling out the worn stereotype defence that it wasn't only black people.

Yet black people were undeniably involved.
The title is right - 'black people', especially the children of the 1st and 2nd immigrants to take responsibility for
themselves.
