Whats the play? with Anthony 'Play' Douglas

WHAT'S THE PLAY: Mr. Play with the Sierra Leone National Basketball Team (Photo credit: Carol J Moir)

IT WAS good to play host to the Sierra Leone National Basketball Team at the weekend. I got to catch up with the 'Canon Royals', who are in London this week for a basketball development programme run by Who's Got Game, in conjunction with the Sierra Leone Government.

Who's Got Game is running a two week skills delvopment programme (on and off the court). The purpose of this programme is to equip the players with skills to help them contribute to active citizenship in Sierra Leone.

They are also fundraising to build a suitable basketball facility for the players back home as all their main basketball facilities were destroyed during the mudslide which occurred earlier this year. The programme has also partnered with Houses of Parliament, Black Prince Trust, AEG and the British Council.

Managing Director and Founder, Dayo Okewale said: "This has been a great honour for us to host for the Sierra Leone national team, the first time ever any national team from Sierra Leone has taken part in a programme abroad. With all that's happened in the country, we believe this will contribute heavily to its redevelopment."

Since we're talking about basketball, I caught up with Rebecca Amissah from Gospel Essence, the resident singer for the London Lions home games. She's going to be featuring on the new Sky One TV show Sing: Ultimate A Capella. Tune in to see if Gospel Essence make it all the way to the final and win the prize of recording an album and a Christmas single.

I caught up with Kelly-Jade Nicholls & Barbara Walters-Ennis the mother and daughter behind WN Publishing. See what they had to say to Mr Play.

Who are WN Publishing?

A: Walters-Nicholls Publishing is a mother-daughter collaboration born out of a joint desire to address the imbalance in positive images available to children of colour.

We have created a children’s bible and prayer boxset, illustrated especially for children of colour, in the hope that this will enable our children to feel encouraged by the fact that they are also made in God’s image.

Tell me more about the project?

A: ‘My Favourite Bible Stories’ and ‘My Favourite Prayers’ introduce children of colour to some of the more popular bible stories and a collection of prayers for different situations, with illustrations that they can identify with.

BOOK: Bible & Prayer book, Illustrated for Children of Colour

Each story is written in a child-friendly way to support children to develop their relationship with God. The stories and illustrations are engaging and fun to read and are specifically aimed at helping them to build confidence and raise self-esteem by seeing images that they can relate to. Families will have a unique and precious keepsake for them and their child to treasure.

Tell me about the Kickstarter campaign?

A: Our project is print-ready and after having different samples made to test factories quality, we have found the perfect factory that will bring our creation to life! Each book will be hard bound, 8 by 10 inches and come as a boxset in a beautiful hardbound slipcase. However, to get such quality comes at a price and that's why we need some help.

We started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to self publish our project. Your support is needed so we can make a larger factory order to help us reduce costs and make the boxsets more accessible worldwide.

Kickstarter campaign

What are your future plans for WN Publishing?

A: Our main aim is to have our project in stores worldwide. We feel so passionate about our project and don’t want this to just be available within the UK. If our Kickstarter is successfully funded, our aim is to produce enough copies to ensure it's available within the different Amazon online stores worldwide.
