Whats The Play? With Anthony 'Play' Douglas

AS A Manchester United fan it was great to meet and speak with Man U legend Andy Cole at the Football Black List Celebration event, supported by the Premier League.

The event celebrates on and off pitch activities and highlights individuals who have been recognised in Premier League football. It was nice to see my good friend Yannick Bolasie (Everton FC and Congo International) pick-up an award alongside Man U legend Andy Cole and Eniola Aluko from Chelsea FC and the England International Women's team among others.

It was an excellent event and platform for black people in football - I'm looking forward to next year already. Well done to and thanks to co-founders Leon Mann and Rodney Hinds, Voice journalist and Sports Editor respectively.

If you are someone who shares memes, imagines and videos online a name you may be familiar with is 'Hackney's Finest' (@hackneysfinest). With over 699k followers on Instagram I had to ask - who is this person, who isn't an artist or a TV personality and why do they have so many followers? It's time to find out.

Q: How did you start the platform Hackney’s Finest?

A: I found myself bored one day and had nothing to do, LOL. I had heard of Instagram but didn’t really know what it was about so I opened an account and was mainly posting selfies to start with. I though, 'nah, this is boring, I might as well stick to Facebook'. I started to look for some funny images, mainly stick men memes and began posting those. The page went from a hundred or so followers to 1k within a few weeks and started growing really quickly. I was so surprised as my aim wasn’t to gain loads of followers but to share things I found funny with friends and family.

Q: What do you like most about what you do?

A: Being able to bring people from all walks of life together through social media is a great feeling. I'm someone that loves comedy and being able to have a laugh and I love to share this with people. There is a lot of negativity online so putting out something positive to put a smile on people's faces is a really good feeling.

Q: Outside of Instagram what do you do with your spare time?

A: I spend time with friends and family and actively visit the gym. I love technology so I’m always looking for the latest gadgets to buy and test out. I have my eye on the Dji 4 drone at the moment.

Q: What is your favourite holiday destination and why?

A: Cancun Mexico! It has gorgeous beaches, amazing night life, great food and one of the best water parks I’ve ever been to. Definitely looking forward to going back there.

Q: What plans do you have going forward with Hackney's Finest?

A: I'm looking to grow the brand beyond social media and get into events. We've got a show coming up this month at the Camden Centre (Sunday 16 April) with many well known talents - everything from musicians to comedians and instrumentalists. Hopefully this is the first of many shows!
