MUSIC ICON Wiley smiled from ear to ear as he was appointed an MBE in the 2018 New Year honours for his services to Music this morning.

The 39-year-old, real name is Richard Cowley, received the honour from the Duke of Cambridge, braved the cold as he posed for the cameras, following his Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Shortly after, he posted a snap to his Instagram with the caption 'Take a picture with the #MBE ok but it’s very cold ????????'.

Wiley, widely hailed as the Godfather of Grime, burst onto the scene in 1996 and found success in the charts with hits Wearing My Rolex, Never Be Your Woman and Heatwave, which was number one for two weeks back in 2012.

Since its inception around 2002, Grime has gone on to achieve mainstream success in UK through artists such as Skepta, JME, Krept & Konan and Stormzy, who won his first two BRIT Awards last week.

In an interview with NME last October, Wiley said he was ready to take a step back from music as a creator of grime, and let it develop through the new, successful artists in the charts.

"Bro, I’m so happy grime’s come back round. Those guys are doing things we never did. Stormzy is having meetings with the people from The Brits. None of us ever did anything like that back in the day.

"It will be hard for me to stop making music. But it won’t be hard for me to sit at home and watch all these sick kids take grime to where I couldn’t take it."

When news initially broke of Wiley's honour last year, the East London-born MC thanked his family “for being there for me when I needed them” and added: “It feels like the school grade I wanted and didn’t get but now I’m finally there.”

Wiley's new album, Godfather II, is set for release in March this year, and is a follow-up to his 2017 LP Godfather - his highest-charting album to date. His autobiography, Eskiboy, was published in November 2017.
