Williams on warpath before US Open


THIRTEEN-TIME TENNIS Grand Slam winner Serena Williams began preparation for the US Open by winning the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada.

The 29-year-old American defeated world number 11 Samantha Stosur in the final 6-4, 6-2 and consequently moved up the world rankings from 80th to 31st.

Williams, who also won the Bank of West Classic last month, looks to have found form ahead of the US Open which begins on August 29 at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Williams has suffered this year with numerous injuries and illnesses, including suffering from a hematoma and a pulmonary embolism.
