GUEST SPEAKER: Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson
THIS YEAR marks the fifth and final year of the Women in World Athletics (WIWA) seminar which has seen a number of high profile women in the sport from around the world come together to share their expertise.
The initiative was a key part of the bid for the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) World Championships London 2017 and World Para Athletics Championships and has been designed to develop the legacy of women’s leadership and officiating in athletics, in preparation for the Championships, as well as increase the involvement of women in sport at all levels and in all functions and roles.
Starting in 2013, the event has continued to grow across the years with over 120 women from 54 countries taking part in activities. Guest speakers have included IAAF council delegate Sylvia Barlag and multiple Paralympic gold medallist, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.
The event, in its fifth year in 2017, will be held in London from May 19 -22 with 80 seminar delegates expected to be in attendance with an exciting programme of activities planned ahead of a significant Summer of World Athletics in London. More details will be available in the coming weeks.
British Athletics’ Officials Manager and WIWA organiser Paula Gowing spoke about the success of the event:
“Last year’s seminar was certainly the best yet and we’re delighted with the progress we’ve made in helping women to develop in sport.
“It’s great to see women from all over the world come together and we hope that WIWA can act as a platform for further progress in the coming years.”
