World's wealthiest black woman debuts on Forbes rich list

WEALTHY LADY: Folorunsho Alakija

NIGERIA’S FIRST female billionaire has made her Forbes Billionaire’s list debut.

Businesswoman Folorunsho Alakija was already born into a wealthy family, but after studying fashion in London, she went into the oil business in 1993.

Her stake in Famfa Oil provides majority of her estimated $2.5bn fortune.

In 2013, the oil tycoon became the world’s richest black woman, knocking Oprah off the top spot.

This year, a total of 172 women made it on to the Forbes' 28th annual billionaires' list – 25 per cent more than last year.

As International Women’s Day will be celebrated on Saturday (Mar 8), it’s a timely triumph to announce that women now make up 10 per cent of the global super-rich.
