SLASHED: Many councils are cutting back on Black History Month celebrations
DON’T EXPECT a song and dance at your local Black History Month event this year, because everything's gone chirpy chirpy cheap cheap.
Unless you live in a riot zone.
October, as you know, is Black History Month. Only this year it isn't. Black History Month is the latest casualty of the Government's austerity package as more and more councils are knocking it on the head to save money, or at the very least slashing the spend to a cut-price token acknowledgement that black people have a history and, therefore, a past. In most boroughs it's Black History Day or Two'. And in others it's 'Black History Money Can't Stretch That Far. Sorry.'
In Brent, where half the population of areas like Harlesden are black, Black History Month has been substituted for Word Up! A Celebration of Books and Reading (you can tell from the Word Up! that we're talking 'black'). In another London borough, Tower Hamlets, the council funding which helped produce one of the country's best Black History Month calendars has virtually disappeared. In other areas of 'black interest' from Leeds to Luton there's very little going on for Black History Month.
You can't do black history on the cheap. It's an insult. If you can't do it well don't do it at all. A half-hearted Black History Month is like a half eaten pork pie.
However the picture is surprisingly different in some of those areas which experienced a riot in the summer.
In Haringey, the area which triggered the summer insurrections after violence broke out in Tottenham, the council has gone so far as to acknowledge 2011 as The International Year for People of African Descent. They have got a fantastic programme of Black History Month events which take place in the borough’s museums as well as its libraries and cinemas.
Likewise Birmingham, where the most horrific consequences of the riots were experienced when three innocent men were mown down by a car, has not scrimped or saved on its Black History Month budget. They’ve included the obligatory troupe of African drummers but there’s also a ‘whodunnit' with history detectives tracing the black history of the West Midlands and a history lesson with live cooking.
In Lambeth, which as far as everybody is concerned is a black borough, the Black History Month programme is lavish in celebrity guests but it’s restricted to libraries in Brixton, Streatham and South Lambeth. But when did Black History Month become an opportunity to justify the use of public libraries? Why are there no Black History Month events in Brixton Market, at the Ritzy cinema or even the Academy music venue as happened in the past? Or does Lambeth think that making people read is going to keep them off the streets?
It's a case of a borough which suffered two lots of riots (Brixton and Clapham Junction) panicked by the fear of Black History Month and even more terrified by the fear of no Black History Month.
Clearly the government's austerity package doesn't apply to areas where there were disturbances in the summer. But is a decent Black History Month worth rioting for? You tell me.

There are many successful
There are many successful black people who have contributed a lot of things in our society. It is only rightful to acknowledge them. We at Secrets of the millionaire mind felt the need of this kind of event for black people. It's just sad that most people only remember them when they hear the word 'slavery'.
Blak History
Black History should relate to black achievement, and should not lay its sole emphysis on slavery. Ater all, black people long existed before slavery, yet there is hardly any materials about those achievement. Whilst it is important for people to learn about slavery, it is equally important to show our achievement in ancient times as a race.
I would further argue that with so many wealthy black people in this country, its about time they put themselves forward and do something meaningful for the black community and we should stop expecting hand-outs from the government. Hence, there is no respect and never will, because those who're in a position to help are too wrapped up in buying their new cars, jewellery including other women outside their race. The Black footballers are a prime example - certainly a real disappointment to many.

What do you mean BHM on the
What do you mean BHM on the cheap? Black people are always waiting on handouts to fund ventures that concern them. We wait on welfare benefits, council house etc . Its sick. Stop it Adebyo. Then when the local government give them this money they often squander, embezzle or mis manage it. Black people are among the biggest consumers in world today. We have to have the best designer clothes, leather sofa, flash cars etc. So why can’t we contribute and fund and promote black history month. We are good at promoting concerts nightclubs, raves etc. The Asian community never wait on hand out to hold their cultural events. Where is the black sustainable community in Britain? No chance for black people are too busy spending their money with the Asians and the Whiteman and everybody else BUT black businesses. If a black man has a hair and skin product shop, black people would walk past it to buy from the Asians selling the same products for 50p cheaper. THAT IS WHAT I CALL CHEAP Mr Adebyo
If we want a BHM to be proud of then we should pay for it and then we might cherish it. Stop blaming the council and everybody else for our failures. The black man worst enemy is himself, we are the cause of our own shame. As soon as we accept that we might begin to get somewhere so please Stop, it stop it ,stop it, I say stop it Mr Adebyo
Give me a break
Firstly all I say is from a British perspective.
I do agree that I don't want hand outs, I am more for a garveyite movement, yet the idea that the 99% white governing body should not support the descendants of the people who due to the kidnapping of Africans who were forced to give their labour making the wealth of this country, just as bad as the concept of a slave buying their freedom....having been born FREE.
I did not ask to have the history of my people ripped away like that I am owed the opportunity to know where I came from and the capitalist system that remains from that time has the indecency to tax us, the children for that opportunity.
I had no role models at all.... the black middle class have a lot to answer for because they they do not share their primary commodity, which is knowledge.
ASK ANY CHILD TODAY WHO MARY PRINCE OR MARCUS GARVEY WAS AND ABOUT THEIR LIVES>>>>>>THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE
ignorant fool

an ignorant man will abuse
an ignorant man will abuse others without reasoning.
Most black people in this
Most black people in this country and highly concentrated in very small geographical areas.
It makes sense to have black history month represented in those areas so the black people can learn about their history.
Im white and I live in an area where I rarely see a black person. Over here I have never seen anything to do with black history. I guess nobody here would really be too interested in something so unrelated to our lives.
Perhaps the taxpayers in each area should vote on this issue.
Dear Brother, The celebration
Dear Brother, The celebration of Black History month is largely viewed as a celebration of black culture and contributions of members of the community to society at large- by the black community. There is no "British ownership" and celebration of this important month because it is not a British acknowledgement of a segement of our society to all Britons. Have any of our national leaders made any statements in recognition of this month? What is more, is that we lack any black leaders of real credibility beyond our community to speak to others in the UK. Where is our MLK? What we do have in abundance however, are the likes of David Starkey whose intent is to shroud his contempt for the black community in the language of concern for modern Briton. Despite Mr. Starkey's assertion we welcome constructive dialogue on race relations. I am hopeful however that Black History Month will be viewed and celebrated by all Britons irrespective of their race.

The point I was making was
The point I was making was that most of the population of this country have no interest in black history. Im just stating a fact. Thats what Ive seen. I bet if you asked most people as in a survey they would go -never heard of it!
Personally I find it interesting and would like to know about african history in particular. I come to this website to browse the jobs occasionally. So Im more informed than most white persons about the black culture.
It is only the politically correct left wing inner city councils that have funded this event and now there isnt the money. A lot of what you call black history is about blacks living in a caucasian majority societies or colony who often speak english, have caucasian anglo saxon names and are of part white heritage. I think black history has to be mainly African history, but we hear nothing of this. Instead its all about MLK,maryseacoles, bob marley, marcus garvey,Tupak,Biggie and Oprah or some ship called the windbrush that brought jamaicans here in large numbers years ago. Does a mere journey on a european owned ship warrant celebration as a historical event? Then why not celebrate my recent cruise!
