ARE YOU thinking about going to university or about to go this October? You’re probably wondering what life at university is really like. You’ve probably been to some open days so you’ll have a rough idea but you could find out more.
It’s fair to say that most students are fearful about going to university, leaving home to embark upon this new chapter in their lives. To put your mind at rest we asked some students here at the University of Bath to video blog once a month about their first year at university. Each month they shared their academic, social and day-to-day experiences over the course of the first year of their studies.
Annette Hayton, Head of Widening Participation said: “The University of Bath is actively encouraging more Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) students to apply so we were especially pleased when Jonathan and Toni agreed to vlog for us. We encourage applications from all students who can benefit from studying here regardless of their background.”
Jonathan’s studying Economics
Jonathan provides a frank and honest account about settling into university life.
He explains that expectations are different at university because the emphasis is on independent study skills and talks about the importance of joining clubs and societies to meet like-minded people.
You can watch all six videos in his playlist to see how he gets on in his first year. You’ll see Jonathan get used to university life and feel much more comfortable in his environment to the extent where he takes on a more responsible role within his student cohort.
Toni came to Bath because her course includes a placement year which should improve her employability.
She lives in an area where people don’t usually go to university, let alone a leading university, and she’s very proud of this.
Like Jonathan, Toni is the first in family to go to university and she say it’s all about getting the right balance between your academic and social life. Toni also has six videos in her playlist and you get to watch her grow as a person and develop her inner confidence.
