Aqua Mum: Sandra Johnson-Murphy
Sandra Johnston-Murphy has started 2007 on a high after receiving rave reviews for her product Swimlite Aqua Mum on reality BBC TV series Dragons’ Den
The mother of two, first thought up the concept of the product while swimming in the pool on holiday with her family.
Sandra, from Market Rasen a rural town in Lincolnshire, was six months pregnant with her son when she experienced lower back ache and sore shoulders while taking a dip. She noticed her daughter’s semi-inflated beach ball on the side of the pool and wondered if fitting it around her bump would ease the strain. Her idea worked a treat and formed the basis of her product Swimlite Aqua Mum. Sandra explained: “There have been increasing reports in the media about women becoming overweight in pregnancy, which in certain cases may result in worrying complications therefore trying to keep fit is so important.
She added: “Water does provide a certain amount of buoyancy, however carrying the extra weight of the pregnancy can shift your centre of gravity causing you to be buoyant below the waterline. In your efforts to correct this imbalance, extra strain is placed on the body which results in an unnatural posture and may cause discomfort in the lower back and neck regions.”
The Swimlite Aqua Mum product is designed to combat this problem. The product is designed to encourage pregnant women to swim more often and for longer periods without having to suffer lower back pain and neck ache.
“I have had really good reaction from people who have used it in my market testing and have had no negative feedback,” she said.
Johnston-Murphy decided to appear on the TV series Dragons’ Den to reach a wider audience. “I decided to appear because of the investment opportunity and to raise awareness of the product.”
“They loved the product and I was very happy with the responses I received. On the programme they usually only give you a few minutes to discuss the product if its new but it wasn’t the case for me. It was largely positive,” she said.
