A DRIVE to find a dynamic artist, and donors, to create a permanent work of art to salute legendary black nurse Mary Seacole, has begun.
Organisers want the artwork, to be located in the grounds of London’s St Thomas’ hospital, to capture the caring spirit and determination of the Jamaican nurse.
The 19th century pioneer overcame racism and other challenges to care for soldiers in the Crimean War.
“It will be a high profile, permanent work of art and the commission is currently £500,000. We have raised £100,000 and we are now looking to secure the rest of the sponsorship. We are hoping to raise some of that through a concert later this year,” said Adriana Paice, the fundraising coordinator.
“We are also going ahead with the selection process. Artists have until August 31 to apply.”
A selection panel, comprising prominent black figures such as Baroness Amos, will select the winning artist.
Donors and artists should contact Philomena Davidson at 020 8900 0880 or phil@davidsonarts.com.
