TOURISM: David Estwick with China's Ambassador to Barbados, Qiang Wei
BARBADOS’ ECONOMIC Affairs, Trade and Industry minister, David Estwick, has urged the Caribbean to look to China to increase falling tourist numbers.
At a sponsored China-Caribbean business dialogue recently, Estwick said regional service providers must explore opportunities to bring more Chinese tourists to the Caribbean.
He said the region must work to improve the current trade imbalance – for example Barbados’ trade deficit with China is US$55 million – by getting more Caribbean goods into China’s markets.
Estwick also said the region must make more effort to learn Chinese and should create more institutions similar to the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, in Jamaica, to teach languages.
