Ngugi wa Thiong’o

Distinguished novelist, playwright and essayist Ngugi wa Thiong’o will be reading from and discussing his latest novel, Wizard of the Crow (2006).

CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

A specially-commissioned 30-minute film is the central element of this exhibition, which examines the themes of genocide and ethnic conflict - looking at some of the common features shared by the horrendous bloodshed in Cambodia, East Timor, Bosnia, Rwanda and elsewhere.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR DAUGHTER IS?

Following its sell out success at the Hackney Empire last year, Angie Le Mar’s critically acclaimed play, Do You Know Where Your Daughter Is? Comes to the Albany Theatre. This is a fast-paced production witnessing the tensions in the relationship between a mother and a daughter coupled with the devastating consequences of peer pressure.

ZAMBEZI EXPRESS

Set to pounding African beats, 30 high-energy performers re-tell the action-packed tale of one boy’s pursuit of the ultimate footballing dream, from the backstreets of a Zimbabwe township to triumph in South Africa.

MAISHA SOLUTIONS

An emotional and personal film by Toyin Agbetu, the man behind the groundbreaking Maafa series of films. The documentary presents Agbetu’s journey across three years and three continents, in search of solutions to the many problems African people currently face as a result of Maafa. Also known as the African Holocaust, the terms refers to the 500 years of suffering of Africans and the African Diaspora, through slavery, colonialism and exploitation.

This play is inspired by the story of Madam CJ Walker, the first African-American woman to become a self-made millionaire. The play celebrates the courage, growth, entrepreneurialism and philanthropic work of Delilah McAndrew. Part of Lewisham’s contribution to BHM.

LOVE, SEX AND ALL THAT JAZZ

This is a theatre production incorporating music, drama, comedy and spoken word. The production explores various aspects of the love relationship and an attempt to answer the why, when and how of relationships. The show stars Shirley Grant, Angela Blake, Michelle Charles, Jackie Hector and many more.

A GENESIS PROJECT

Five playwrights, Lekan Balogun, Iweha Chukwuma, Busola Elegbede, Kunir Okesipe and Ozi Okoli have been invited to London to work with British actors and directors. The culmination of the week will be a presentation of extracts followed by a panel discussion about the impact of new writing for the theatre in Nigeria today.
