Didier Drogba, a winner last year, and a stronger contender for this year’s health award, recently astonished the public by committing the £3 million he received form a Pepsi endorsement deal to building a hospital and orphanage in his country, Cote D’Ivore.
This year other footballers and organisations using football for development will be fighting for the SCORE4africa Award categories - including Peace, Health, Youth, People’s Choice, Green, Education, foundation, Diversity, Mentoring, Partnership and Lifetime Achievement.
The year’s lucky winners will receive their awards in front of a star studded audience of celebrities, politicians and business people, including the FA Chairman, Lord Triesman.
‘Footballers have always contributed to African development through remittances, investments, charity support, peace work, mentoring and youth work.
“Now Didier Drogba’s £3 million contribution this year and Craig Bellamy’s donation of £500,000 last year has shown that Premier League footballers are in the front line of development activity in Africa,’ said Onyekachi Wambu, one of the event’s organisers.
Co-event organiser, Ayo Alli added: At this year’s event we will also be launching our Living Football Legacy Project.
“These are community hubs containing social enterprises linked to local African clubs to create jobs and small businesses and help the clubs achieve sustainability.’
