WARNING: Members of Al-Shabaab
ISLAMIST MILITANTS in Somalia have warned local contractors to stop helping the United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) distribute aid by January 1.
Al-Shabaab, which has battled transitional President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed’s UN-backed government, said in a statement that the aid agency must buy food from local farmers or leave impoverished Somalia.
It said: “WFP causes many problems for the local Somali farmers by importing food from outside Somalia and that discourages the Somali farmers. So the WFP should buy its supposed food distribution from Somali farmers or stop its operations in Somalia."
