STATUE: Monument cost millions
RELIGIOUS LEADERS in Senegal have condemned as “idolatrous and a waste of money” a US$27 million (£16.6 million) giant statue of a semi-naked couple embracing.
The statue, a project of Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade, has been called The Monument to the African Renaissance and is being built in Dakar. The statue will be bigger than the US’ Statue of Liberty when complete, the BBC said.
Religious Imams have begun a campaign of prayer against the building of the statue to denounce it. President Wade plans to charge visitors to see the statue.
