Eye on the tiger

Golf’s no.1 in the UK and ready to win again

OPPONENTS AND MEDIA will have their eye on Tiger Woods this week when he competes in the 2010 Open at St Andrews.

The world No 1 feels he is closing in on peak form ahead of trip to home of golf

Open champion in 2000 and 2005, Woods is keen to win again after a turbulent six months which have revolved around his personal life and impending divorce from wife Elin.

"I'm really looking forward to getting there and competing. I hurt myself early on in my comeback, which put a dampener on things, but I feel like I'm right on pace now."

Asked when he fell in love with the home of golf, the former world No 1 replied: "The first time I played there in 1995.

"My introduction to links golf was Carnoustie in the Scottish Open that year and then St Andrews - that's as good as it gets for your introduction to links golf.

"I just fell in love with it, because of the lines and the angles - it's not what everyone says it is, they say if you hit miles left it's okay but you are left with no angle.

"The R&A sets up the pin positions so you have to be a little bit more strategic with how you play, so you have to be creative and your touch has to be great because you're going to have a lot of long lie putts - putts that break in three or four different directions, so it's a lot of imagination.

"If you look at the past champions at St Andrews, a lot of them have great short games, and great imagination and ball control.

" I've just always enjoyed playing there in the Dunhill event and the Opens - two very different courses but both great and unique."
