Giving back to the community

Levi Roots, Omar and Labour MP Chukka Umunna stepped out to show their support for a south London primary school

THIS was a school fair with a difference. The recent carnival summer fair held at Christ Church Streatham primary school was a roaring success, with community stars attending to help raise awareness and funds for the school. With the school’s library in need of refurbishing and restocking, the Parent Association pulled out all the stops to create an enjoyable and worthwhile event.

Entrepreneur Levi Roots, soul sensation Omar and MP Chukka Umunna – who was a former pupil of the school – were all in attendance (and donated their time for free) to inspire both the children and their parents, and to show the importance of giving back to the community.

School governor and parent Casey Ray-Billington said: “We were proud to have the support of these three successful men, who are positive role models and living proof that it’s possible to achieve one’s goals through hard work, persistence and talent.”

Attendees paid just one pound to enter the fair and they certainly got more than their money’s worth, with Omar performing a couple of songs and Levi and Chukka interacting with the excited youngsters (and equally excited mums and dads!) The fair was attended by around 500 people and over £3000 was raised for the school fund.

Ray-Billigton added: “It is a good school, but there’s always more to be done. This fair proved to be a truly inspirational event, and a reminder to parents that with their involvement, kids can achieve so much more.”
