GENERATING THE FUTURE

Comments 0

The Generating Genius project has won the support of black parents everywhere

Here was a project designed to raise the self-esteem and aspirations of African Caribbean pupils in the classroom.

And the diaries of the boys chosen to take part in Generating Genius seem to show that the project is achieving what it set out to do.

Perhaps, at last, we are finding solutions to the increasingly troublesome question of the future of black youth in this country. And the explanation why the boys are doing so well is not just that they are in a predominantly black environment.

Many of London’s schools are all black anyway, by virtue of location.

What we should look at as the basis of a solution is the fact that the University of West Indies, where they are based, provides an environment which supports their growth. Their abilities are believed in and they are challenged accordingly.

Several reports by leading black educationalists have shown that boys respond well to a structured environment, active learning and male role models.

These young men are being shown the possibilities of success in life beyond what they might see on MTV. They are realising that learning can be hip.

The availability of resources and support will be key factors in deciding the future of Generating Genius. But if it continues to be successful, the case for government backing will grow stronger.
