Birmingham hosts inspirational award ceremony

THE ASSOCIATION of Jamaican Nationals Birmingham UK’s Annual Gala and Local Heroes Awards saw seven inspiring Midlands heroes, who have spent years helping to improve the lives of others in their communities, matched with seven of Jamaica's national heroes.

More than 400 guests attended a recent dinner at Aston Villa Football Club attended by the High Commissioner of Jamaica Anthony Johnson, Lord Bill Morris of Handsworth, and former 5,000 metres world record holder David Moorcroft.

The event was hosted by Beverly Lindsay, chair of the Association of Jamaican Nationals. She will become the first Black president of Birmingham Rotary Club next year.

Award winners were: Ronald Miller (matched with Jamaican national hero Alexander Bustamante), Wade Lynn (Norman Manley), Hyacinth Mears (Nanny of the Maroons), Alvin Vernon (Marcus Garvey), Andii Green (Sam Sharpe), Wayne Henry (George Gordon) and Amelia Williams (Paul Bogle).

Special recognition awards went to Liz Millman, Professor Browne and the Victoria Mutual Building Society.
