The full-length sermon delivered by the Bishop of London, the Right Reverend Richard Chartres, acknowledged the divisive figure that Margaret Thatcher was as prime minister between 1979 to 1990, but deftly moved away from any concrete form of political comment.

Chartres said: After the storm of a life led in the heat of political controversy, there is a great calm.

"The storm of conflicting opinions centres on the Mrs Thatcher who became a symbolic figure - even an ism.

"Today the remains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher are here at her funeral service."

The man of God appealed to the universal theme of shared humanity and its common end while remembering the late Baroness.

"Lying here, she is one of us, subject to the common destiny of all human beings."
