12 year old celebrates launch of her first book

TALENT: Makaylah Safiya Williams

A 12-year-old girl is celebrating the launch of her first book.

The book written by Makaylah Safiya Williams is based on a true story on her travels to The Gambia and the initial fears she had of visiting the country.

During her visit, Makaylah discovered that television did not tell children the full truth and she discovered the beautiful people from the African diaspora with amazing stories to tell.

Tilted My First Trip To Gambia, Makaylah was encouraged to write the book by her father, who is also an author.

“Even though my dad has two books already, being an author was not the first thing on my mind,” she said.

“I was told to record my experience whilst in The Gambia so I kept a diary of what I did and how I felt. When I returned to England I shared my adventures with my family and friends, many found what I did inspiring.

“From there the diary transformed into a children's book that encourages children to be brave, confident and to visit The Gambia.”

My First Trip to The Gambia is a great way to teach children more about the continent of Africa and develop their confidence, self-esteem and sense of adventure,” said David Williams, Makaylah’s father.

“Teachers and educators can use the quiz page at the back of the book as well as the poetry challenge for classroom learning activities.”

The book will be celebrated at a launch event in north London on May 4, 2019. Guests at the event will include Andrew Muhammad “The Investigator”, Griot Chinyere, Manhood Academy for Boys, Womanhood Academy for Girls and many more.

10% of book sales will be donated to the Manhood Academy for Boys' rites of passage programme and The Womanhood Academy for Girls.
