Dr Lynvale Bloomfield, an People’s National Party MP for the Portland Eastern constituency, was discovered by his housekeeper on Saturday (February 2).

A motive for the killing has not yet been determined.

Julian Robinson, the People's National Party general secretary, announced the reward at a press conference yesterday, The Gleaner reported.

Dr Peter Phillips, the leader of the opposition party, said he was shaken by the death of Bloomfield.

“No Jamaican should ever have to suffer at the hands of criminals in their own country. The death of Dr Bloomfield must not be allowed to go unpunished. The police must employ whatever resources that are necessary to conduct a full and complete investigation, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice,” he said in a statement.

He added: “This is indeed a very sad day in the history of our country as we are now dealing with the stabbing death of a sitting member of parliament in his home by unknown assailants.”

Jamaica’s prime minister, Andrew Holness, paid tribute to Bloomfield.

“Shocked at the news of Dr Bloomfield. We extend our condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.

“Despite being on the other side of the aisle, we knew of his love for his constituents and Jamaica.

“The entire [Jamaica Labour Party] family and Jamaicans are mourning this morning,” he wrote on Twitter.

In a statement, Holness expressed “deep sadness” at Bloomfield’s death.

The police have assured the prime minister that a high powered team of investigators has been mobilised to determine the circumstances of Bloomfield’s death.
