Abidal returns to football after liver transplant

TWO-TIME CHAMPIONS League winner Eric Abidal has made his first appearance for Barcelona almost a year after undergoing a liver transplant in April 2012.

Back in March 2011, the 33-year-old France international underwent surgery to have a tumour removed from his liver but then needed a transplant following complications with the procedure.

However, the left-back resumed training in December after being given the all clear and featured for Barcelona B in a Ligue 2 fixture against Istres on March 18, playing 65 minutes of the match.

Capped 61 times by France, Abidal was an integral part of Barcelona’s victorious Champions League sides of 2009 and 2011.
