Africa's finest land Golden Boot on bittersweet day for Reds

TWO OF A KIND: Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah (left)

WHILE Liverpool failed to lift the Premier League trophy they crave, the club’s African stars - Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah – ended up sharing the Golden Boot (for the PL’s top scorer) with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

All this was after a bittersweet 2-0 victory for the Merseyside club against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which saw the Reds narrowly miss out being winners of the title to near perfect rivals Manchester City.

Aubameyang and Mane's final day doubles brought them level with last year's winner Salah on 22 goals apiece.

Mane, who has been in fine form at the latter end of the season, scoring 9 goals in 9 games rightly earned him a share of the spoils.

Mane scored twice against Wolves, both from Trent Alexander-Arnold crosses, with the right-back breaking the record for assists by a defender in a single campaign.

Liverpool’s Brazilian Goalkeeper Alisson Becker won the Golden Glove for his 21 clean sheets in his first season for the Merseyside club. The Brazilian joined the Reds from Roma for £65 million last summer and has been instrumental to Liverpool’s bid for silverware.

The impressive stats by the Reds must be hard to swallow, especially after losing just one match all season, after a very hard-fought battle to win the Premier League.

Manager Jurgen Klopp had nothing but praise for his players. ”It always helps when a goalie makes a few saves. 21 clean sheets is quite impressive, well deserved.

“Virgil van Dijk won an award, I didn’t know before, but I saw him carrying a boot; Trent smashed all stats for assists for full-backs and Robbo was close and nearly scored today; we have two of the top goal scorers, right?

“Look, if I would start telling you all the positive things I can say about this team we would sit here until an hour before the Champions League final starts, that’s the truth.

“It’s not really the moment for that; we know it and we feel it, it’s disappointing.”
