Alek Wek slams modelling world

TAKEN ABACK: Supermodel Alek Wek says she was shocked by how little people ate in the modelling world

SUPERMODEL ALEK Wek has slammed the modelling world for their attitude towards food.

The 34-year-old catwalk queen told the Daily Beast that she was shocked by what she saw when she moved to the US to pursue a modelling career.

"In this world I found many people were hungry too, but for different reasons. They wanted their bodies to look a certain way, whether their bodies were meant to or not," Wek said.

She continued: "They chose not to eat."

Wek, who fled a civil war in Sudan and settled as a refugee in London in 1980s, was thrust in to the modelling world and soon after was featured on an Elle magazine cover.

"In restaurants in my Brooklyn neighborhood, I always ask for a doggie bag, to bring the leftovers home," the Sudanese beauty said.

Wek, whose life in the fashion world is a far cry from her humble beginnings in war-torn Sudan, has used her background and status to bring to attention the situation of the drought that has been hitting millions of people on the Horn of Africa.

"Nearly a million refugees have fled the famine in Somalia, seeking help from camps in Kenya and surrounding countries. These people have less than nothing; mothers don't have enough breast milk to nurse their children," Wek, who is also an advocate for the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said.
