ASHLEY COLE is leaving the LA Galaxy after the club declined to pick up their captain’s 2019 contract option.

The club also decided not to re-sign seven other players in a surprising move.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender joined LA Galaxy in 2016 and was named captain in March, two months after signing a one-year contract extension.

The 37-year-old made 93 appearances during his time with the Galaxy, scoring three goals.

The Galaxy, meanwhile, confirmed that 16 members of their 2018 roster are due to return next season, including Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Since announcing the news, many have taken to share to social media to share their thoughts on Cole and whether his professional football career is almost over.

One user took to Twitter, saying: “Ashley Cole is the best defender Galaxy has or will ever have. The best left back in the world at his peak. His quality means it doesn’t matter if he has slowed down. Ridiculous decision.”

Another wrote: “Came in criticized but, if you leave, you leave with the hearts of the fans. Hope to see you back but best of luck in the next adventure if we do not. Thanks for everything. @TheRealAC3 #LAGalaxy”
