Atletico Madrid fans racially abuse Real’s Marcelo

REAL MADRID left-back Marcelo was racially abused by fans of local rivals Atletico Madrid after his team had secured a 3-0 win in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.

The racist abuse are said to have taken place while the 25-year-old Brazil international warmed down following the derby match on Wednesday night (Feb 5).

Marcelo did not play in the match but he and other team-mates went for a 20-minute warm-down once the game had ended.

About 500 Atletico supporters remained in the Real Madrid stadium when the abuse occurred.

It is understood fans directed monkey noises at the defender.

Reports say the player was subjected to chants of: “Marcelo is a monkey”.

His son then greeted him on the pitch, and then the fans were heard to shout: “May your father die”.

At this stage it is unclear whether Spanish football authorities will take action against the fans and Atletico.
