Beyoncé surprises Colin Kaepernick with Legacy award

HONOUR: Beyoncé and Colin exchange smiles during this momentous occasion.

BEYONCÉ PRESENTED Colin Kaepernick with Sports Illustrated's Muhammad Ali Legacy Award last night (5 December), and the NFL athlete pledged to 'continue to work for the people (...) with or without the NFL's platform'.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback was acknowledged for using his sports platform to protest racial injustice and police brutality, prompting a nationwide take-a-knee movement in the process.

The Formation singer was brought out as a surprise presenter by Daily Show host and comedian Trevor Noah.

The mother-of-three said she was 'proud and humbled' to present the award to Kaepernick for his courage to open "an important conversation about race in the country".

Beyoncé said: "Thank you, Colin Kaepernick,' 'Thank you for your selfless heart. And your conviction. (...) Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequences or repercussions, only hope to change the world for the better.'

After taking to the stage amid rousing ovation, Kaepernick told the audience: "I accept this award, knowing that the legacy of Muhammad Ali is that of a champion of the people. And one who was affectionately known as the 'people's champ'.

"I accept this award, not for myself but on behalf of the people. Because if it were not for my love for the people, I would not have protested. And if it was not for the support from the people, I would not be on this stage today."
