Birmingham community founder dies aged 92

PIONEER: Caswell Thompson

THE funeral of groundbreaking activist Caswell Thompson, 92, takes place today (May 10).

Known to many simply as ‘Mr T,’ he was one of seven Caribbean settlers who set up the Birmingham Community Association (BCA) in 1966, to form a rare source of advice and support for locally-based black people in the 1960s.

BCA Treasurer Frances Sherwood knew Thompson for over 40 years. She told The Voice: “He was an amazing man who was a pioneer for our community.

“He started BCA in his own front room and was the last of the surviving founders. Everyone loved Mr T – he will be greatly missed.”

The funeral service will take place at Small Heath Baptist Church, Birmingham and Thompson will be interred at Handsworth Cemetery, with the reception set to take place at The Emerald Club, Small Heath, Birmingham.
