The International Slavery Museum is celebrating Black History Month with free events that everyone can get involved in, here are just some of the month’s highlights:

The museum is marking its 10th anniversary with a special exhibition Ink and Blood: Stories of abolition which explores abolition (the ending of slavery) and reveals the lives, losses and triumphs of the people it affected in the 18th and 19th centuries and their later freedom. You can explore the exhibition with one of the museum’s free tours.

Nina Simone in focus (14 October 2017) is a presentation by poetess Empress-jai about the life and music of the jazz songstress, exploring how she used her music to speak out about inequality and injustice as well as her activism in the Civil Rights Movement.

The museum will have a free screening of Hidden Figures (27 October 2017), the incredible story of Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan and Katherine G Johnson, the pioneering and inspirational women of the early years of NASA's space programme. Visitors can also make a Faces of Change badge to celebrate inspirational and iconic Black women throughout history.

There are also lots of free activities to engage children with Black History Month, including freedom fighter badge making (28 October 2017), incredible stories of the escape of enslaved Africans through the underground railroad (23 October 2017) and workshops that open up a world of amazing civilisations in West Africa (22 October 2017).

Black History Month events are also taking place across National Museums Liverpool venues. Find out more at
