Cameroon athlete does a runner

'NOT IN TROUBLE': 16-year-old Balana Maria Michel has been missing after failing to board her return flight to Cameroon

POLICE ARE searching for a teenage athlete from Cameroon who did a runner after a sports competition in the Isle of Man.

Balana Marie Michel, 16, has been missing since Wednesday, September 14, when she failed to appear at Manchester Airport for her 6.30am return flight via Brussels.

She had come to the UK as part of a national squad competing at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

It is believed she had a black Puma rucksack bearing the Cameroon flag and £10 in cash.

Balana, who speaks only French, is not thought to have any friends or family inside the UK and her coaches have her passport.

Detective Constable Andy MacNab, of Manchester Airport CID, said: "We would urge anyone who has seen Balana or knows where she is to contact us.

"It is quite likely she is feeling frightened and confused in a city she does not know.”

Team-mate 16-year-old Foumena Marie Gaelle also disappeared but later handed herself in at Grey Mare Lane Police Station on Saturday morning.

She is being cared for by social services.

DC MacNab added: “The girls walked off of their own free will but we were extremely concerned for their welfare - and still are concerned about Balana. She has little or no money and absolutely no one to turn to in this country.”

He urged Balana to hand herself in and said she was not in any trouble and would receive support.

Anyone with information is asked to call officers at the airport on 0161 856 0250
