Car of the Week: Range Rover Velar

Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic HSE D300. Price range: £70,530 (test drive)

RANGE ROVER’S Velar is the new stunning five-door Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that fills the near £30,000 price gap between the entry-level Evoque and the cheapest Range Rover Sport.

Put simply, the Velar brings glamour, modernity and elegance to the Range Rover family and offers a unique combination of design excellence and engineering integrity.

The distinctive design of the Range Rover Velar features perfectly optimised proportions and a stunning silhouette.

Its super-slim Matrix Laser-LED headlights, flush deployable door handles and sleek Touch Pro Duo infotainment are all hallmarks of Range Rover’s reductionist design philosophy.

When my test drive arrived, in Kaikoura Stone with light oyster/ebony trim, I had to admit to a level of excitement. After all here was set of wheels worth £70k and looking every inch the part.

There’s a plethora of engines depending on how quickly you want to move or money that you want to save

It’s easy to get comfy in the room-like cabin. This imposing vehicle comes with 20-way electrically adjustable seats that move every which way, including for lumbar adjustment, and will even heat, cool and massage you. Add in plenty of movement for the steering wheel and it's easy to find a set-up.

Seeing out the back isn’t that easy due to the small rear screen and thick rear pillars.

At least all Velars come with rear parking sensors, while S trim adds a rear-view camera as well.

SE models upgrade this to a 360deg camera and blindspot monitor; these are optional on lesser models. And if you are really worried about parking, then there's always the HSE trim, which gets a park assist system that will locate a space and steer you into it. This is also an option on lower trim levels.

There are more toys than Hamleys. You get four-wheel drive and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system are both standard.

The list of options is ridiculously comprehensive – and some at no cost all.
Privacy glass (£390), the fixed panoramic rodd (£1,115), R-Dynamic Black Pack will put you back £620.

The 20-way seats with driver/passenger memory, massage and heated and cooled front seats, Meridian Surround Sound System 825W with 16 speakers plus subwoofer and Matrix LED Headlights Signature DRL come under the no cost options.

The Range Rover Velar has been judged the most beautifully designed vehicle on the planet, winning the World Car Design of the Year title at the 2018 World Car Awards.
After a seven day evaluation, all I can do in concur with the above sentiments.

Prof. Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover CEO, said: “The Range Rover Velar is an outstanding, superior SUV. This product speaks for itself.

“To win the World Car of the Year design award means a lot to us. I feel very honoured.”
Trust me, the honour and privilege was mine!
