Cedi Frederick's take on wellbeing in the modern world

BALANCE: Many people find it hard to focus on their wellbeing in the modern world

FORMER ENGLAND international basketball player Cedi Frederick, has built a successful career as a leader in the business world for over 30 years. Alongside that, he has achieved over 25 years chief executive level experience running multi-million pound social care organisations.

Impressively, Fredrick’s appeared on The Powerlist on four separate occasions between 2008 and 2012 as one of ‘The 100 Most Influential Black People in Britain”. In 2015, he was acclaimed as one of the UK's “1,000 Black & Asian Heroes 1950-2010”.

“The truth is, the long hours, commuting, the fast-paced lifestyle and the mounting pressures on employees to meet expectations and drive change has such an impact on health. More than 1,000 people a year are falling victim to stress-related heart attacks,” says Frederick.

After experiencing the pressures that come with a senior leadership role, Frederick recognised the importance of a work-life balance and its effect on mental health.

He says: “Anxiety, stress, depression and ‘burning the candle at both ends’ is having a huge impact on people from all walks of life. I had to do something.

“The issue is that we have a tendency to glorify our long working hours and our working culture means we put our health second. I realised that as a CEO I wasn’t acknowledging how stressed I was or the potential damage it was causing. When I did, I tended to be a bit macho about it; working late hours becomes a badge of honour and I fobbed stress off as a normal part of success.”

Putting his words into action, Frederick combined his unique perspective on holistic wellbeing to lead La Nova Group, a company that specialises in events, programmes and experiences that optimise health, wellbeing and personal performance.

The group’s services include Frederick’s new executive retreats, which are built up of an experienced team of mindfulness coaches, counsellors, physiotherapists and facilitators. While encouraging people to take a step away from stress, the dedicated group offers the appropriate support for people to work on themselves.

At La Nova Group, the specialists provide a toolkit of strategies including mindfulness and menus developed by nutritionists to deal with the daily pressures of modern life. The long-term approach supports people after the retreat, which benefits them when they’re back in the workplace.

As the life-changing retreat continues to tackle the pressures of workplace stress, Frederick maintains his focus on “wellness and wellbeing for everyone, as the real key to greater work success”.
