Chris Hughton sacked from Brighton

OUT: Chris Hughton

BRIGHTON & Hove Albion have confirmed that Chris Hughton has left the club with immediate effect after the club finished 17th in the Premier League.

Hughton’s assistant Paul Trollope and first-team coach Paul Nevin have also left in a shock departure.

Chairman Tony Bloom said: "Our run of three wins from 23 Premier League matches put our status at significant risk. It is with that in mind, and the performances during that period, that I now feel it's the right time for a change.

"Undoubtedly, this has been one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make as chairman of Brighton, but ultimately one I have made due to how we struggled in the second half of the season."

Houghton joined Albion in December 2014 and was contracted until 2021. During his time, the 60-year-old took the club to the FA Cup semi-final this season, where they lost 1-0 to Manchester City.

Many have taken to social media to share their thoughts on Hughton's departure. One social media user said: "Chris Hughton is gone!! Joined in 2014, led them to their first PL season in 2017 and then KEPT THEM IN IT for 2 years, the mans a genius! Wrong decision to sack."

Another said: "Sad that Chris Hughton has been sacked after keeping Brighton up. Both owners and fans have become so impatient."
