THE WHITE police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last week has been charged with manslaughter, prosecutors announced yesterday afternoon (Sept 22).

Video released by law enforcement on Monday (Sept 19) shows police officers in Oklahoma fatally shooting Crutcher whose car was stalled in the middle of the street. He appeared to have his arms raised when the single, fatal shot was fired.

CHARGED: Betty Shelby

“The tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Crutcher are on the hearts and minds of many people in this community,” Kunzweiler said during brief remarks before he announced the charges.

In a press conference, Crutcher’s twin sister Tiffany said that although she was pleased that Shelby had been charged, “we understand that nothing will bring him back.”

“Full justice requires not just charges but a vigorous prosecution and a conviction,” said attorney Demario Solomon Simmons.

“Not only for this family, not only for Terence, but so it will be a deterrent for law officers all around this nation to know you cannot kill unarmed citizens.”
