Dad creates kids' book with diverse princess characters

PRINCESS CREATOR: Israel Cook, founder of The Princess Planet

A FATHER has created a series of books that feature diverse princess characters for young girls of colour.

Author and illustrator Israel Cook crafted The Princess Planet series after being inspired by his daughter.

The brand hopes to showcase cultural diversity and instil that all people have inner beauty, strength and self worth.

The range currently includes two story books and a colouring book, with a clothing line for babies, toddlers and young girls launching soon.

Watch Israel Cook discusses his inspiration behind The Princess Planet:

"Princess planet is a new brand of children’s entertainment. We promote princess characters with diverse hair textures, skin tones, and cultural backgrounds," said founder Cook.

The Princess Planet launched with 16 original characters from all over the world, created by authentic women from each region. Each woman personally worked on the development of her character’s personality, appearance and core story.

Each of the 16 princesses have their own biography, including their age, life goals and favourite song, all which can be found on the brand's website.

"The current market does not do enough to show the world’s diversity or even the United States’ diversity in their products," added Cook.

"If this doesn’t end, children will continue to grow up disparaging their skin, hair and features, and will in turn lack confidence. Princess Planet helps to increase cultural pride, inner beauty and self-worth. This is also a great way to explore other cultures and teach acceptance."
