Defoe’s mum blamed for troubled start in Toronto

MOTHER'S BOY: Defoe and his mum Sandra (PA)

JERMAIN DEFOE’S mother has taken some of the blame for the striker’s interrupted start at Major League Soccer side Toronto.

The Canadian club claimed that Defoe’s likely January exit after only one season into a four-year deal, is largely down to the influence of mum Sandra.

It is reported that Defoe is being lined up for a reunion with Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp, who previously managed the 32-year-old forward at Portsmouth and Tottenham.

According to Toronto president Tim Leiweke, the club had to pull out all the stops to persuade Defoe’s mother that her son should join the side.

Reportedly hip-hop star Drake and basketball champion LeBron James were deployed to help persuade her, while the deal included luxury accommodation for her.

Speculation over will he or won’t he go situation, has been a long-running issue for the club. Speaking last month to students at the Ted Rogers School of Management, Leiweke was quoted as saying: “I think if he doesn't want to be here, you get rid of him.

“My attitude [is] if you want to be here and you want to buy into what we're doing, let's go.

“Roll up your sleeves and we'll fight together. And I will be there with you every day.

“If you don't want to be here, get the hell out of our way.”
