Doreen Lawrence crowned 'Woman of the Year'

RACE CAMPAIGNER Doreen Lawrence was given a special award at this year's ‘Women of the Year' ceremony.

Lawrence, the mother of the murdered teenager Stephen, was commended for her ongoing campaign against racism and injustice in her 18-year battle to bring the her son's killers to justice.

Singer Beverley Knight presented her with the award at the 57th annual Women of the Year ceremony held at the InterContinental Hotel in Park Lane, London.

Many well wishers took to Twitter to congratulate the ‘inspirational’ 59-year-old, with one user writing: “Good news she has touched so many people. Saw her speak at a Holocaust Memorial Event. It will always stay with me.”

Another simply added: “Doreen Lawrence is such an inspirational woman.”

“Full respect to Doreen Lawrence and all the work she has done in her campaign for justice,” a separate tweet read.

Five awards were presented to women ‘who have proved an inspiration to others through their courage, selflessness, dedication and achievement’.

Other winners included author PD James, women's rights activist Zainab Salbi and singer Kate Woolveridge.
